International and Small Order Freight Shipping Tips

NEW YORK − There are several things to consider when choosing the best freight transporter to ship internationally or to ship small orders.  ShipAlmostAnything.com, an online auction website platform that brings individuals and companies together with an unlimited number of Shipping Service Providers (SSP), shared a few tips and tricks of the trade.
International Shipping:  When it comes to shipping or receiving product internationally, businesses turn to the resources and expertise afforded by dealing with freight shipping companies.

 ShipAlmostAnything.com offers customers these tips:

  1. Provide accurate freight dimensions - measure twice!

  2. Get a true weight and include the weight of packaging materials.

  3. Oversize items may require additional information – check with freight forwarder

  4. Packaging is crucial to protect goods – consider crating or palletizing all freight shipments.

Smaller Orders:  Small orders are considered “Less Thank Truckload” or LTL.  The term LTL means less than truckload and refers to the shipping method where different small orders are combined on to one truck and usually delivered to more than one destination.  This provides for economies of scale.  For example, a manufacturer of mufflers might use an LTL Freight Shipping service to send 20 mufflers to an auto supply store.  An accounting firm may ship 500 pounds of paper and other office supplies.  Both of these businesses should utilize a LTL Freight Shipping service.

Choosing a Provider:  ShipAlmostAnything.com connects consumers and businesses with freight forwarding and freight transportation needs to professional, qualified freight transporters via an online auction.  With the ShipAlmostAnything.com website, shippers can post as many shipments as desired.  Shipping service providers place competitive bids to win the auction for the shipment. This helps drive down the cost of shipping dramatically versus conventional methods of obtaining shipping/moving price quotes.  The ShipAlmostAnything.com website provides shippers all the tools necessary to make informed decisions in shipping LTL orders.

Two Woman Create ShipAlmostAnything.com

How did two women from the New York metropolitan area wind up in the world of Internet shipping?

When my kids went off to college, the last thing I thought I would be doing was starting a new business. The notion that the business would be an Internet shipping business would even be more astounding, since my background was neither shipping nor Internet related. I had spent 30 years in pharmaceutical and medical marketing working for major pharmaceutical companies. My job involved daily contact with my customers on a face to face basis and the pressure of meeting quarterly dollar goals.

Michelle's background is also far from the world of shipping. She was the Director of Marketing for a major cosmetic company and later helped run a successful book printing company.

Both of us, however, have always been good listeners, successful problem solvers, and knew how to network. We have also learned the value of surrounding ourselves with hard working professionals that have entrepreneurial spirit. We are goal oriented and highly driven women.

Although we weren't necessarily looking to begin new career paths, we started brainstorming about ShipAlmostAnything.com about two years ago. Through different experiences, we came to realize that shipping stuff wasn't always as easy as one might think. If it didn't fit nearly into a box, then the process became complicated. And that's how ShipAlmostAnything.com was born! It's easy shipping for your complicated stuff.

Everyone we knew had a story to tell and spoke of someone they knew, who had a similar story about the difficulties of finding a shipper to move their stuff. We listened to more horror stories than we could have ever imagined. Lost shipments, overpricing, misrepresentations, deadlines missed, items broken, just to name a few. The hours that friends, family, and colleagues had to spend just trying to locate the right person or business to do their shipping became a daunting process.

We had family with children graduating from school, who had to leave items behind because it was too expensive to warrant shipping their items home. We had friends who were really into online buying and wanted to buy or bid on items that were reasonably priced, but the shipping costs made the item too price prohibitive to buy. Colleagues of ours had to over pay on items for things because they bought at stores that provided shipping and those shipping costs were astronomical. Options were limited across the board.

The Internet was becoming an obvious place to spend more and more time to investigate and solve many of our everyday problems. Michelle and I began to think that it made natural sense to use this vehicle as a means of solving everyday shipping problems that individuals, large and small businesses, just about everyone in every walk of life needed to satisfy.

We have spent several years learning about the trucking industry from folks who have been involved in various aspects of our business. We have taken courses, attended seminars and read many books to help us learn more about the way we can have the Internet work for us. WE view our new company ShipAlmostAnything.com, as a site to help connect those that need to have something shipped with those that do the shipping. It is an easy, uncomplicated way to take handle a problem which we face everyday. A problem that in the past was a complicated process to solve.

Our site is a platform that connects customers that have stuff to ship, (we refer to them as shippers), with Shipping Service Providers, referred to as SSP's. ShipAlmostAnything.com provides SSP's the ability to bid on work that never would have crossed their radar screen in the past. They now can compete with the "big guys."

Auction bidding, one low price, no commissions, transparency to talk with those that do the shipping, ease, convenience, plus many other aspects began to evolve into the web site which we just launched in March.

We feel that our business model is so exciting because it helps SSP's grow their business and increase their profits by having our team build a base of national customers for them to choose from while at the same time, we help the shipper so that they can make informed, well thought out decisions, about their shipping needs while saving time and money.

We have partnered with a web host, a graphic artist, successful Internet executives, and marketers from various backgrounds. We have engaged the services and learned about the shipping industry from people who have spent years running successful transportation businesses. We hired SEO and SEM firms to help us reach the target audiences which our business was built.

Michelle and I are learning more and more each day about the shipping industry. Everyone we have met and everyone we are meeting in this industry have been wonderful to learn from and work with.

We welcome all to visit www.ShipAlmostAnything.com to learn more about the benefits of our site and become aquatinted with the next generation in web site shipping auctions. Sign up now during our FREE trial period.

As seen in the

Website Proves there's almost nothing you can't ship

Though firearms are still forbidden, frozen rats just need stamps.

Carole O' Hanlon went to ShipAlmostAnything.com because the month-old West Babylon start-up has already helped move just about everything, from pianos and chandeliers to a show horse and a box of frozen rats.

A kind of online auction house, ShipAlmostAnything president Michael Bader said the site is the Priceline.com of shipping. It has over one hundred shipping service providers, or SSP's on board, paying about $40 a month to bid on people's posted shipping needs.

O'Hanlon logged on looking for a good price and the confidence her priceless items would get safely from her Messapequa home to Florida.

After searching the Web for three weeks of trying to find a reliable and inexpensive method of getting a crib and a changing table to her expectant step-daughter, she was ready to give up.

The process was dragging because this wasn't just any baby furniture, but objects with a long, happy history in the O'Hanlon family. Some shippers seemed too fly-by-night to entrust her cargo with and some reliable ones were too expensive.

Then O'Hanlon came upon ShipAlmostAnything. She listed the items on the website, where she wanted them shipped and a time frame. A shipper with the right attitude contacted her directly and said the cost would be $700.

"They came and packed it all up and three days later it arrived safely," O'Hanlon said. "Before the best price we could get was $1,500 and being senior citizens we couldn't afford that," O'Hanlon said.

ShipAlmostAnything is not unique in charging a flat fee to bid, bust most online shipping sites charge about a 20 percent commission to the SSP's which is passed along to the consumer, said Bill Clark, president of the Washington, D.C. - based American Institute for Shippers' Associations.

The shipping industry had a catastrophic 2009, with revenue off 20 percent over 2008, Clark said. Germany-based shipping behemoth DHL kicked off the crash by taking $10 billion in losses, pulling the plug on its U.S. operations in January 2009 and pink slipping 13,000 employees.

Last March FedEx announced third quarter revenue was down 15 percent even after picking up market share with DHL gone from the scene.

It wasn't just the big boys who were hurt badly by the recession, said Mike Muscalara, president of New Jersey - based Mover'n Shipper which charges a flat fee to SSP's to bid on jobs.

"Independent guys who were struggling to make $80,000 a year were now making $20,000," Muscalara said.

Online bidding for jobs helps the smaller companies, who have space on a truck and can fill it by bidding on what will fit he added.

Bader has picked a good time to launch his site, with signs the shipping industry could be moving again, Clark said. The last 40 days have improved significantly, the trade association leader said. Although it's too early to make predictions, companies replenishing inventories is the first positive sign in months.

What separates ShipAlmostAnything from the majority of online shipping services is the quality of the website, said Chris Cadigan, who owns a Unishipper franchise in southern Nassau County, mainly shipping freight for companies.

"The website is quite clever, easy to navigate, great for the consumer market," Cadigan said.

Cadigan agreed the industry is coming back. In the last six weeks freight volume has gone up and pricing has gone down because carriers can give better deals because of the up tick in volume.

Bader said that at any one time there might be 40 auctions going on at ShipAlmostAnything. Asked what the "almost anything" means, Bader said "Anything legal."

ShipAlmostAnything.com Launches First Commission-Free Online Auction Shipping Site

Ship Your Most Complicated Stuff, Easily

WEST BABYLON, NY--(Marketwire - April 6, 2010) -  Each day Americans ship hundreds of millions of items across the country. Consumers want to know that their complicated stuff is being shipped at the best price, while shipping service providers want to maximize their load on every trip. Today, ShipAlmostAnything.com ushers in a new way for shippers and service providers to conveniently get the most out of their shipping experience by launching the first-ever commission-free, online auction shipping site.

ShipAlmostAnything.com has no registration fees. This means that shippers can list their stuff, select from multiple bids of nationally-ranked shipping service providers and choose their ideal provider based on their own criteria: date, route, reputation, reviews, or price. Unlike other sites, ShipAlmostAnything.com's transparent platform allows shippers and service providers to talk directly to each other to ensure that every shipment arrives perfectly. This direct communication gives community members a greater sense of trust and control than ever before. In addition, only ShipAlmostAnything.com allows members to upload photos, video, and text of their treasured items, allowing service providers to understand a shipper's precise needs before committing to a job. With one click, shippers can sit back, wait for multiple bids to come in, and ship their stuff at a mutually agreed upon price and terms.

"I was nervous at first to ship our show horse nearly 500 miles through an online site," said Jennifer Fiske, owner of Memory Field Stables in Montgomery, Alabama. "Our shipping service provider Keith was right on time and kept me updated the whole trip. I really love the program ShipAlmostAnything.com has created -- simple, reliable and trustworthy. What more can you ask when you're shipping your most cherished possessions?"

"Our goal is to create the most open and valuable platform for shippers and shipping service providers to find each other," said founder Michael Bader. "Whether, it's pets, cars or furniture, we know that shipping anything that doesn't come in a standard box is tough. That's why ShipAlmostAnything.com was designed to match the right job, with the right shipping service provider at the best price possible."

Shipping service providers (SSPs) on ShipAlmostAnything.com enjoy the benefits of unlimited bidding on an unlimited number of shipments, nationwide for about $1/day. The site gives independent, local, regional, and national carriers the opportunity to access previously unattainable jobs and eliminate partial loads forever. Because SSPs never pay a commission to use the site, they can enjoy greater freedom in pricing each load to grow their business.

Only ShipAlmostAnything.com's proprietary mobile E-lerts® system notifies each SSP when a shipping job becomes available along their route, or based on their criteria, so no opportunity is ever lost. The 24/7 automatic service alerts SSPs via text, email or phone about any new opportunities. Now, SSPs can bid on jobs, speak directly to shippers and make a sale in real time, without ever leaving their vehicle.

"Finally there's a shipping auction site that understands how we work," said Keith Groves, owner of Corny Creek Livestock. "With ShipAlmostAnything.com I can actually talk to the shipper before agreeing to the job and I can bid on unlimited jobs for one flat fee. One thing's for sure, I will never pay another commission again to haul a load in my truck."

Right now, shipping service providers can take advantage of ShipAlmostAnything.com's free trial offer. Just by registering, shipping service providers will be enrolled on the site and can find new opportunities immediately. SSPs can connect with returning college students, home buyers/sellers, small businesses, eBay retailers, and those shipping anything and everything from cars to pets and more.
